The University of Reading has over 125 years of history with origins as a University of Oxford extension college. We are located in the town of Reading which is\u00a0 23 minutes away via train from central London. Our scenic campus includes a lake, woodlands, gardens and an inspiring architecture.<\/span><\/p>

The University is taking a leading role in saving our planet and most recently we won the first place in the People and Planet league 2023\/24 for our environmental and ethical practices.<\/span><\/p>

The University has a branch campus in Malaysia. The programmes there mirror those at the UK campus and follow the same quality standards of curriculum, assessment and teaching delivery.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>About the town of Reading<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Reading has a bustling town centre with a range of places to meet with friends, grab a drink and a bite to eat, or just hang out and relax.<\/span> The Biscuit Factory<\/a><\/span> is a brand new community space whilst<\/span>\u00a0Spinners<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a place you can visit for a game of crazy golf, interactive darts or bowling.<\/span><\/p>

The Oracle<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>shopping centre is home to the big names in retail, but there are also independent stores and boutiques around town. Caf\u00e9 Yolk is a hugely popular pit stop for brunch, while Eclectic Games stocks one of the largest board game collections in the country.<\/span><\/p>

Reading has an array of cafes and restaurants dotted along the riverside to excite your taste buds. With Hyderabadi, tapas, Lebanese, Ethiopian and vegan options, you\u2019re sure to find somewhere to satisfy your appetite. Be sure to check out the new<\/span>\u00a0Blue Collar Corner<\/a><\/span>\u00a0street food market, spanning across two floors with delicious street food such as vegan tacos and bao buns.<\/span><\/p>

Reading has a number of beautiful parks and nature reserves, which are perfect for relaxing with a book or enjoying a picnic. The river Thames runs through a number of them, creating a haven for wildlife and rowers. Try out paddle boarding or kayaking, or jet skiing and water obstacle courses at Lagoona Park.<\/span><\/p>

Reading is home to 11 museums and galleries and University of Reading owns three of them. Amongst them are the Cole Museum of Zoology, Museum of Berkshire Aviation and<\/span> Royal Berkshire Medical Museum<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>

Reading Festival<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is one of the best-known festivals in the UK, with over 87,000 fans flocking to see some of the biggest names in music. For six years, we partnered with festival organisers, Festival Republic, to give some of our students the opportunity to work backstage at the event. Working alongside the nation\u2019s leading press publications \u2013 interviewing chart-topping bands and reviewing headline acts \u2013 our students have interned as content producers, working behind the scenes with industry experts.<\/span><\/p>

Reading has lively music, comedy and theatre scenes with venues such as Sub89, South Street and the Hexagon, which has hosted acts including Kaiser Chiefs and Omid Djalili and various local and touring stage shows.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>Cost of living<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

For 2025\/6 academic year, our tuition fees are in the range of \u00a325,250-\u00a329,950 per year. The living expenses in Reading can come to between \u00a31,200-\u00a31,400 per month which will include the cost of accommodation, food, entertainment, and occasional trips outside of Reading. <\/a>Proximity to London<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Trains <\/span>from to Reading to London Paddington run approximately every 15-20 minutes throughout the day and the average journey time is around 30 minutes. Students can opt in for a railway discounts card which can give them 1\/3 off their rail fee<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>

<\/a>Student accommodation facilities<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

We have almost 5,000 rooms on and or within 10\/15 minute walk from our campus. Depending on preferences on rooms, the cost per week can vary from \u00a3140 to \u00a3300. There are also options for students who want to include meals in their plans.<\/span><\/p>

We have over 150 clubs and societies on our campus that students can choose to join. They span across a variety of interests including academic, entertainment, religious and career-oriented.<\/span><\/p>

We have a Sports Centre which houses sports halls, squash and tennis court, air-conditioned studios and playing fields. Standard membership is \u00a325 per month, which allows unlimited use of the gym and unlimited access to all classes.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>Henley Business School<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Founded in 1945, Henley is one of the oldest business schools in the UK. It is triple accredited <\/strong><\/span>by EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA.<\/span><\/p>

Henley participants don\u2019t just learn a list of facts and theories. They develop and apply their learning to real-life situations, examining issues around ethics and sustainability and building an understanding of the wider global impact of business on society. This creates future leaders with strong business acumen, who can make tough choices on ethical decisions and strive for positive change in order to decrease inequality and increase diversity.<\/span><\/p>

At Undergraduate level the University is ranked highly for our Real Estate programme<\/strong> (1st<\/sup> in \u201cLand and Property Management\u201d), Business and Management<\/strong> (16th<\/sup>) and Accounting and Finance<\/strong> (23rd<\/sup>) in the Good University Guide from The Times and Sunday Times 2024.<\/span><\/p>

At Masters level we are recognised for our degrees in Finance<\/strong> (6th<\/sup> in the UK and 33rd<\/sup> in the world, Financial Times 2024)) and Management<\/strong> (8th<\/sup> in the UK, Financial times 2023)<\/span><\/p>

Students interested in Finance will be taught in the ICMA (International Capital Market Association) Centre. <\/strong>It is Europe\u2019s first active collaboration between the capital market industry and a university department, founded in 1991, established for over 30 years. The ICMA Centre is now one of the larger specialist university finance departments in Europe. It has the most extensive non-investment bank dealing room facilities in the world, with over 100 terminals<\/strong> in three dealing rooms equipped with Refinitiv Eikon and Bloomberg.<\/span><\/p>

Students will graduate with transferrable and real-life skills that will\u00a0set them apart from other graduates and a clear advantage over\u00a0others in this job market.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>Department of Meteorology<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The University of Reading\u2019s world-class research in climate change and its impacts, and our leadership driving action through education and partnership, has won the University a The Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership award by the Times Higher Education (THE) in 2023.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

In 2022 we were the recipient of a prestigious Queen\u2019s Anniversary Prize<\/strong> for our world-leading research, teaching, stewardship and outreach on climate change. The University’s nomination to the awards committee was titled \u2018Tackling the Impacts of Climate Change – From Global to Local’ <\/strong>and outlined the work of the meteorologists, climate scientists, hydrologists, ecologists, soil scientists and \u2018big data’ specialists.<\/span><\/p>

Our Whiteknights campus is set to house the largest cluster of weather and climate scientists in the world, following an agreement to build a new state-of-the-art international headquarters for the<\/span>\u00a0European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Experts from ECMWF will be located alongside the University’s Department of Meteorology, as well as staff from the UK Met Office, National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, and National Centre for Earth Observation.<\/span><\/p>

We are ranked 5th in the world for Atmospheric Science<\/strong> (ShanghaiRanking 2023 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects). Our pioneering research informs how governments, industries and communities respond to complex environmental issues.<\/span><\/p>

In the QS World Rankings 2025 we have been ranked 9th<\/sup> in the UK for Environmental Sciences<\/strong> (80 in the world) and 10th in the UK for Earth & Marine Sciences<\/strong> (42nd in the world).<\/span><\/p>

Professor Ed Hawkins’<\/strong> \u201cclimate stripes\u201d<\/strong> are now widely recognised as a\u00a0universal and simple illustration\u00a0of how temperatures have risen around the world over more than a century. They have been shared on social media by the United Nations, on the cover of a\u00a0new book by Greta Thunberg, on the main stages at Glastonbury and\u00a0Reading Festival\u00a0and in a fashion partnership\u00a0at 2021\u2019s London Fashion Week.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The University of Reading is ranked 27th<\/sup> in the world by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024: Agriculture & Forestry <\/strong>(which includes the subject of Food Science.) This makes us third in the UK for the subject.<\/span><\/p>

We have worked in Food science for nearly 100 years<\/strong> and we have graduates who now occupy influential positions in the food industry, both at home and abroad.<\/span><\/p>

Our pilot plant offers more versatility than any other university<\/strong> \u2013 with almost 1100m2<\/sup> of floor space devoted to approximately \u00a34million worth of equipment.<\/span><\/p>

Under one roof we have leading experts<\/strong> in all of the component disciplines that contribute to food and nutritional science \u2013 no other UK department can make this claim.<\/span><\/p>

Because our staff are actively engaged in world-class research<\/strong> they will tailor their teaching to reflect changing trends and emerging technologies within the sector.<\/span><\/p>

Professor Julie Lovegrove<\/strong> is an award-winning researcher and Head of the Hugh Sinclair Unit of Human Nutrition. In 2022, she won the British Nutrition Foundation Prize for her work on the impact of nutrition on public health.<\/span><\/p>

Professor Glenn Gibson <\/strong>Glenn is a world authority on microbiota. He has published over 450 research papers and 8 books. He currently researches acute and chronic gut disease, with specific projects on probiotics and prebiotics, gas production, gut microbiota development, gastroenteritis, obesity and colonic homeostasis.<\/span><\/p>

Professor Gunter Kuhnle<\/strong> Member of the Committee on Toxicity, a scientific advisory committee that provides advice to the UK government on the safety of chemicals in food, consumer products, and the environment. Gunter is interested in the effect of phenolic compounds on health, and has been investigating their metabolism and health effects for more than two decades. He is also a keen user of social media sharing his passion for Food Science and has appeared in many TV shows explaining the science behind the foods we eat.<\/span><\/p>

<\/a>Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Based in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, the Graduate Institute for International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE) provides the opportunity to study in a truly diverse community of students from more than 40 countries.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

At GIIDAE, we cover natural and social sciences related to agriculture and the rural environment, the food chain, applied economics and marketing, climate change and international development.<\/span><\/p>

Our programmes are designed around this interdisciplinary environment,<\/strong> which allows us to reflect the real-life complexity of challenges that global communities and businesses face when aspiring to a sustainable future.<\/span><\/p>

We provide a range of specialist facilities in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, from arable and dairy farms to analytical laboratories. These facilities are widely used in our research, and to enhance our teaching and learning.<\/span><\/p>

The University has considerable land-based resources in the Reading area, with approximately 800 hectares of mixed farming lands and woodlands<\/strong> spread throughout the surrounding areas of Arborfield, Shinfield and Sonning.<\/span><\/p>

Located at the University’s Arborfield Farm and established in 1992, the Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR)<\/strong> is a unique facility for applied and strategic large animal research.<\/span><\/p>

Research at CEDAR addresses key issues for the sustainability of animal production systems, such as environmental impacts, milk and meat composition and consumer health, antimicrobial resistance, and animal behaviour and welfare.<\/span><\/p>

Our 180-hectare Sonning Farm is home to a 15-hectare Crop Research Unit,<\/strong> where we undertake field trials and field-based research into arable, forage and soft fruit crops.<\/span><\/p>

The Crop and Environment Laboratory<\/strong> is a state-of-the-art controlled environment facility dedicated to crop physiology and crop breeding research. It comprises plant growth chambers, environment-controlled glasshouses, and pollinator exclusion and pollinator flight cages for work on pollinator-dependent crops.<\/span><\/p>

Based at Brogdale Farm in Kent, the National Fruit Collection<\/strong> is curated and maintained by the University in collaboration with the Farm Advisory Services Team, working on behalf of the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). One of the largest fruit collections in the world<\/strong>, the National Fruit Collection includes more than 3,500 named apple, pear, plum, cherry, vine and cob nut cultivars.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
