The University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield is a member of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group of universities. Founded in 1905 on penny donations from the local community, we have a proud history of discovery, innovation and social change from pioneering the first medical use of penicillin to recently developing life saving drugs for the treatment of ovarian and breast cancer.

Our University now attracts over 30,000 students from 150 countries each year, supported by 8,000 members of academic and professional staff. We collaborate with individuals, businesses and organisations to make a difference locally and globally.

The University of Sheffield has a global reputation for its exceptional teaching, impactful research, international outlook and outstanding student experience. Our researchers tackle global challenges, shaping policies worldwide and changing lives. Our research also informs teaching across a wide range of disciplines, including arts and humanities, engineering, medicine, dentistry and health, science, social sciences and business.

The most recent Research Excellence Framework (2021) confirmed our reputation, with 92% of our research and impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. We’re 105th in the world and 13th in the UK in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.

We’re proud to be home to 11 cross-faculty research centres of excellence that harness the University’s wealth of interdisciplinary expertise and research excellence to solve the world’s most pressing challenges.

Sheffield is a great place to study and live. It’s friendly and welcoming and when you choose to study with us, you become part of an international community with friends from 150 countries. We were voted University of the Year and Best for Student Life in the 2024 Whatuni Student Choice Awards, and our Students’ Union has been voted the best in the UK for seven years running by the Whatuni Student Choice Awards.

We offer students a unique combination of academic excellence and an amazing student experience. Whilst here, there are over 400 student societies and 60 sports clubs on offer. The Students’ Union also has its own cinema, live music venue and a variety of places to eat and drink. Our vibrant campus community is committed to sustainability, with eco-friendly initiatives like the zero waste food shop and clothing swap shop.

Sheffield is a green city with real character, based on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Home to more than half a million people, it’s the fourth biggest city in the UK and was recently named as the number one city for lowest cost of living by the TotalJobs Quality of Life Index, meaning it’s possible to experience an excellent quality of life without breaking the bank.

We invest in outstanding facilities, study spaces and support for our students and staff. Five libraries, labs, studios and study spaces are all part of our walkable city campus. Our online library has almost one million ebooks and over 60,000 journal titles, with fast, free, secure Wi-Fi available across campus.

Through these centres, we are tackling a range of issues and affecting real change in a number of areas. Here is just a snapshot of the work some of our research centres are doing:

  • Our Centre for Machine Intelligence is dedicated to the transformation and acceleration of our research, innovation and teaching via Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Data Connect is the trusted partner connecting researchers with health and social care data, enabling research that improves lives regionally, nationally and globally.
  • The Healthy Lifespan Institute is the UK’s first interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to understanding and preventing multimorbidity and frailty to help everyone live healthier lives for longer.
