Queen Mary University of London

Queen Mary University of London has a distinguished heritage that spans over two centuries, shaped by four pioneering institutions: St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, The London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College, and Queen Mary College.

Its roots reach back to 1785, when The London Hospital Medical College was established as England’s first official medical school, followed shortly by St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in 1843. Both were founded on principles of serving disadvantaged communities and advancing medical education. Westfield College, founded in 1882, became one of the first higher education colleges for women in the United Kingdom, while Queen Mary College originated from the People’s Palace Technical Schools (opened in 1887), created to widen access to education in London’s East End.

These institutions gradually came together through a series of mergers that reflected a shared vision of academic excellence and social progress. In 1989, Queen Mary College merged with Westfield College, followed by the unification with Bart’s and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1995. The University adopted its current name, Queen Mary University of London, in 2000.

Today, Queen Mary stands as a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, recognised for its global impact and commitment to inclusivity. Its long-standing commitment to excellence in research and innovation, education, and community engagement continues to define its identity, embodying the belief that “great ideas can and should come from anywhere”.

Find out more about our history.

Queen Mary University of London is recognised globally for its academic excellence, research intensity and inclusive approach to education. As a member of the Russell Group, the Uuniversity combines world-class education with a deep commitment to social mobility, innovation, and global engagement.

With over 32,000 students and 5,700 staff representing more than 170 nationalities, Queen Mary offers one of the most diverse learning environments in the world. Its academic community is supported by an annual income of £712 million, including £145 million in research income, reflecting sustained investment in discovery and intellectual advancement.

Queen Mary’s teaching and research span disciplines from medicine and dentistry to law, engineering, business, and the humanities. Its academic strengths are evidenced by outstanding performances in national and international league tables:

  • QMUL is ranked among the top 100 globally and top 10 in the UK (US News and World Report 2025–26)
  • QMUL is 110th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2026
  • QMUL strengthened its excellent global top 10 per cent position, climbing from 141 to 134 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. For research outputs, we rank 31st in the world.

Research at Queen Mary drives real-world change, as 92 per cent of it  assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021), with particular distinction in Medicine, Law, Linguistics and Drama. Queen Mary researchers have led breakthroughs such as the discovery of a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, the development of gene therapy treatments for haemophilia, and studies that influenced the creation of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

The University’s commitment to knowledge exchange and innovation is reflected in its consistent top-tier performance in the UK’s Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), where it holds the highest possible ratings for research partnerships, public and community engagement, and intellectual property and commercialisation. Queen Mary also maintains strong ties with industry and enterprise through initiatives such as the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre, the Centre of the Cell, and pioneering Degree Apprenticeship programmes.

Guided by its founding commitment to social justice, Queen Mary offers a uniquely supportive environment where students from all backgrounds can thrive.

Located in London’s vibrant East End, Queen Mary offers a self-contained campus with a close-knit community atmosphere rarely found in the capital. Students benefit from on-site accommodation, green spaces, cafés, and 24-hour study facilities, all within easy reach of central London. This combination of city energy and campus comfort creates a secure and inspiring setting for study and personal development.

Dedicated teams offer counselling and mental health services, academic advice, financial guidance, disability and neurodiversity support, and tailored assistance for international students, care leavers, refugees, and those estranged from family or carers. Queen Mary’s approach to inclusivity has earned national recognition, including the Platinum Watermark for Public Engagement, being the first UK university to receive this distinction.

Queen Mary also has an exceptional record in widening participation. 94 per cent of undergraduates come from state schools, 45 per cent are the first in their family to attend university, and 37 per cent are from lower-income households—making it the most socially inclusive university in the Russell Group. In recognition of this, it was named University of the Year at the UK Social Mobility Awards 2022 and ranked first in the UK for social mobility by the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the Sutton Trust.

The Students’ Union actively promotes student well-being through initiatives such as mindfulness workshops, volunteering opportunities, cultural events and sports. With over 300 societies and clubs, students have countless ways to connect, collaborate and build friendships across cultures.

A leading choice for students and employers, we have a strong track record in employability and earnings, preparing our students for success after university:

  • We rose 13 places to 11th in the 2026 University Compare Employability Rankings, which are based on student and alumni feedback.
  • Ranked at 17th for 2025, we have been among the top 20 UK universities targeted by leading employers for the past five years (The Graduate Market in 2025 report).
